In using Microsoft Word as a benchmark ODMA-aware application while testing a new DMS integration, it was noticed that Word 2000 operates differently with ODMA on Windows NT than it does on Windows 98.
The differences in the use of ODMA operations suggest that Microsoft Word 2000 does not use ODMA properly on Windows NT. Documents that are created for storage into an ODMA DMS may be lost with no indication of a problem. Changes to documents retrieved from an ODMA DMS may also be lost.
Analysis so far suggests that the problems originate in Microsoft Word 2000. The Save failure is triggered by some difference in Microsoft Word 2000 configurations on Windows NT 4.0 and on Windows 2000.
There are very few reports of this incident, suggesting that it does not occur systematically in most Microsoft Office configurations using ODMA.
After configuring Word 2000 to operate with ODMA, conduct integration trials where it is not important whether a document is lost.
Create a test document in Word 2000, using File | New. You should receive an invitation form the DMS to provide information about the document you want to create.
When entry of the document is complete, Use the File | Close menu selection to end editing of the document. If the document is closed without any invitation to save the document, you may be seeing this incident.
Use File | Save or the Save button to always force documents to be saved via ODMA. Do this any time a modified ODMA-accessed document is open in Microsoft Word 2000 and you want to ensure that the document is saved to the DMS. Do this before using File | Close or closing Word 2000.
This incident has occurred with the following configuration:
Microsoft Word 2000 | Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with
ODMA Connection Manager ODMA32.dll 2.0.0 |
The following actions are being taken to resolve this incident:
The following steps are being taken to confirm the claims made in this incident report:
- Dennis Hamilton
- reviewed old ODMA Tech mail for untracked incidents, logged this incident (2000-08-11) and then recorded the incident (2001-03-04) as part of having all backlog recorded. Identified apparent relationship to X001000 and X000100 and initiated further investigation to confirm that.
- Boon Long
- provided the initial notification that the ODMA trace logs were different between operation of Word 2000 on Windows 98 and on Windows NT.
